Long Term Evolution

New generation of wireless communication standards

MERA follows communication technology evolution trends and invests in expertise development in new generation of wireless communication standards, including LTE and LTE Advanced. The following subsystems are in focus: Evolved UTRAN (LTE Radio Access) with core and transport subsystems: EPC (Evolved Packet Core) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem).

MERA LTE project portfolio includes:

  • Research projects for eUTRAN,
  • EPC/IMS components design and integration,
  • OA&M solutions,
  • Network optimizations tools/techniques,
  • eUTRAN components simulators.

In summer 2010 MERA and Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS), a Berlin based research and development facility specialized in developing multi-domain networks and interoperable, user-centered solutions for open communication systems, have launched a joint project in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) domain. Within the frames of this collaboration, MERA is working on the OpenEPC (Open Evolved Packet Core) platform, namely in the field of Mobility Management Entity (MME) and relevant MME components and interfaces. MERA is contributing to the prototyping of the components and connecting LTE (Long Term Evolution) components to the OpenEPC for more flexible and faster communication networks. The expanded technology was demonstrated in October 2010 at the 1st FOKUS FUSECO Forum in Berlin, Germany.

Having great telecom experience and knowledge in All-IP and wireless telecom domains MERA is going to grow the expertise futher. Starting from 2H 2010 the corporate strategy includes investigation of VoLTE (Voice over LTE), expanding Evolved Packet Core prototypes according to the latest 3GPP specifications, connecting eNodeB to OpenEPC, 3GPP Rel 10 use cases.
